Acupuncture
Chinese acupuncture has a 2000-year history. Today, acupuncture is a safe and painless procedure. Placing hair fine sterile acupuncture needles in acupuncture points relieves pain and influences the body to heal. There are several ways to explain how acupuncture works.
The traditional explanation for the effects of acupuncture is that it affects the flow of "Qi" (pronounced chee) in the body. Qi is the animating force of the body. Qi flows through the body regulating organs and the flow of blood. Qi rises and flows on the surface of the body through acupuncture channels or meridians. Each channel has an association with an internal organ and body function; along the channels are the acupuncture points. Unobstructed flow of Qi through the channels preserves good health. When there is ill health, pain, or trauma the flow of Qi has become obstructed. An acupuncturist uses traditional diagnosis to decide what acupuncture points and techniques are best to restore the flow of Qi and therefore good health.
Western science has been researching acupuncture for years and the work continues. We now know that acupuncture influences the function of the brain, nervous, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems. Acupuncture effects the release of hormones that lessen pain, increase circulation, calm the nervous system, and regulate immunity. Acupuncture releases the bodies own natural painkillers called endorphins. Endorphins are better at regulating pain than even the most potent pain medications. Today acupuncture is used to relax muscle spasms, relieve migraine headaches, treat the pain of fibromyalgia, improve vision loss from macular degeneration and increase fertility. It is an exciting time as research reveals how this ancient technique influences the bodies own capacity to heal. Acupuncture can treat a wide variety of conditions.
